Your Wi-Fi network is the front door to your business’s digital world. If it’s left wide open, cybercriminals don’t need to hack in — they just walk right through.
Here’s how to secure your wireless network and prevent common attacks before they happen.
1. Rename the Default Network (SSID) Default names often reveal the router brand or model. That gives hackers clues about potential vulnerabilities. Rename your SSID to something unique but anonymous.
2. Use Strong Encryption (WPA3 or WPA2)
Make sure your Wi-Fi is using WPA3 or, at minimum, WPA2 encryption. Avoid outdated options like WEP or open networks entirely.
3. Set a Strong, Unique Password
Don’t use simple or shared passwords. Choose one that’s long, random, and not reused anywhere else. Avoid posting it on sticky notes near the router.
4. Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
WPS is a convenience feature that can open you up to brute-force attacks. It’s best to turn it off in your router’s settings.
5. Separate Guest and Internal Networks
Never let visitors use the same Wi-Fi as your company’s systems. Set up a separate guest network with limited access and bandwidth.
Our Final Thought:
Your Wi-Fi doesn’t need to be complicated to be secure. A few simple changes today can protect your business from major headaches tomorrow.
